Social activities
The students at the semester course will of course spend most of their time in the studio with their classmates and teacher. But apart from the teaching, they are also a part of the creative and international environment at The Animation Workshop, generated by all the people, the students, artists, teachers, and professionals within the animation industry that study or work here.
During the semester, The Animation Workshop arranges different events where everybody, across departments, is encouraged to participate. As a student at the semester course you have the possibility of meeting exciting people from all over the world, who works within many different areas of the visual and creative universe.
Some of these events and activities are scheduled in a ‘Soft Value’ programme, which is the school’s after-hours activity calendar. The Soft Value programme is adjusted every semester, but usually offers a variety of different types of physical activities, such as Morning Dance, yoga, Tai-Chi, football, basketball, and badminton. In addition, croquis-drawing, film nights, presentations, Friday bar, and parties are regularly part of the programme.
The programme is based on ideas and requests from the students, and most activities are also run by the students themselves.

Being a student at the semester course
Regardless of the preceding drawing abilities, everybody attending the semester course will experience progress not only in their drawing abilities, but also on a personal level. The level of teaching may vary, but is always constructed in a manner that challenges the individual student at his or her own drawing level. The class assignment is often the same for all students, but the teacher helps the students individually, giving instructions that match their abilities.
The students at The Drawing Academy go through a process of immersion and work very intensely with drawing as a craft. Many are surprised by how mentally challenging it can be, but also by how satisfying it can be to work so intensively with drawing for many hours every day. The intense work pays off and many students will experience noticeable progress in very little time. However, they will inevitably also experience times with great frustration, particularly when combining the different elements of a drawing. At the final exhibition it is, however, clear to everybody how much they have improved during the semester, in terms of drawing abilities.
Some students are good at drawing before they start as students at The Drawing Academy, but still improve considerably during the semester. Our experience is that the students who are open to trying new techniques and methods are the ones that evolve the most during the semester – regardless of prerequisites. The semester course helps the students to professionalise their drawing and to focus on the strictly technical aspects as a basis of a creative professional career. This is why there is great emphasis on teaching the students how to receive feedback on their own drawings and how to give feedback on drawings made by others. The students learn to distance themselves from their work and how to relate themselves professionally and constructively to the feedback they receive on their drawings.
