Innovative animation project nominated for Reading Prize

The National Centre for Reading has nominated Centre for Education and Animation’s project “Animated for Reading” for the prestigious Reading Prize (Læseinitiativprisen).

The award is awarded by The National Association of Reading Pedagogues.

Henriette Romme Lund, Communication Consultant, National Centre for Reading says of the nomination: “The project has developed and implemented an innovative and exciting project that shows how it is possible to go in new directions in relation to improving reading skills”.

The children participating in the project have improved their genre knowledge, linguistic awareness concurrent with laughing, playing and telling each other interesting stories.

The purpose of the project is to develop children’s reading skills by making short animated films. When making animated films, a lot of senses are activated e.g.: hearing, seeing, moving, creativity and many others. Using animation as a learning tool is a different and new way of teaching. 'Animated for Reading' is a project collaboration between Centre for Education and Animation, The National Centre for Reading and Viborg Municipality.

Three fourth grade classes from Søndre Skole in Viborg take part in the project. Twelve pupils were chosen to participate in the experiment. The chosen pupils were pointed out by a Reading Consultant as the weakest readers of the year group. They were then offered a special course in animation whereas the other classmates were offered a basic course in animation. Pupils attending the special course in animation got the title “Super Users”.

Aase Holmgaard, Psychologist and project coordinator says about working with the children:

"As adults our focus were on supporting the children in the linguistic elements of the film making process. This was done by wording their actions and thereby making them conscious about what they were doing. For example, one day a boy said 'I discovered that verbs are all the things that move whereas nouns are the things you cut out with the scissors'. This statement we interpreted as a sign of his linguistic consciousness and a result of our pedagogical method of using animation as a teaching tool."

The Reading Prize was awarded for the first time in 1997.

One of the main purposes of awarding the prize is to convey knowledge about new developments in the area of reading tools and as a source of inspiration for others.
