Den Gyldne Kolibri

Den Gyldne Kolibri

Short film in combined 2D og 3D by Andreas Sørensen.

The project
Den Gyldne Kolibri is a short film produced by The Open Workshop in co-production with Urban Paradise Productions, PlotPoint Films, Århus Filmværksted and supported by Den Vestdanske Filmpulje.

The protagonist of this short film is the 12 year old Sarah who spends most of her time in her imagination. She does not have any "real" friends but she does have many imaginary friends instead that she often plays with. They go on adventures as often as possible, and the time spent together with her parents and in school just has to be endured by Sarah until once again she can go to the backyard and play. Sarah’s parents are aware of this situation and try their best to make Sarah get a “real” friend – in their own individual way.

The short film is a narrative about a girl’s imaginary world and how it relates to the real world in which she is meant to live. The major question raised in the film is whether you should comprise your imaginary friends or retain your wild imagination when growing up.

In Sarah’s imaginary world, characters and elements are animated through both classical 2D as well as 3D animation. Certain optical instruments have been employed in the portrayal of Sarah that makes her appear small and detached from the real world.

The project has been long in the making and is greatly influenced by the director’s childhood, as well as his sister’s childhood who up to a late age lived more in her imagination than in the real world. The narrative is relevant for children and adults alike, as sympathy is created for Sarah, but also for her parents to a great extent and their way of dealing with Sarah’s imaginary life.

The artist
Andreas Sørensen has lived most of his life abroad, and consequently his school years have been spent there as well. Andreas graduated as a graphic designer from the Media school in Viborg in 2001 and graduated later as a director from The National Film and Television School in London, England. Den Gyldne Kolibri is Andreas’ fifth film as a director, but he has even more experience from working on other films as for instance editor, visual effects artist etc. Den Gyldne Kolibri offers an opportunity for Andreas to utilize his diverse skills and make them come together in a film that transcends the child’s universe in an impressive visual effects short film.

The animation is conducted by Frederik Villumsen, Henrik Sønniksen and Peter Smith, recent animation graduates from The Animation Workshop.
