Semester Structure

This intensive, hands-on course gives you the opportunity to refine and expand your working knowledge of storyboarding for 3D and 2D animation, animated television, and live action film.

Preliminary course plan:

Weeks 1-3: Introduction weeks
During the first three weeks you will be building up and refining skills and knowledge that you need for storyboarding. The three weeks combine drawing classes, classes in basic film making, an introduction to Storyboard Pro and lectures on storyboarding. You also get to make a small project.

Weeks 4-5: 2D television animation storyboarding module
In this 2-week module you will be storyboarding a sequence from an animated TV series and in that process learn about staying on model, thumbnailing rough ideas and using the computer to create rough boards, clean boards and animatics.

Weeks 6-7: 3D animated feature storyboarding module
In this 2-week module you will be storyboarding a sequence from an animated feature film. Topics include the story artist’s role in the animation production pipeline, pitching, exploiting a 3D environment with dynamic camera movement, acting and gag-writing.

Weeks 8-9: Live action combined with 3D animated feature storyboarding module
In this 2-week module you will be storyboarding a sequence from a live action feature film that incorporates 3D animated characters and environments. Working with the director, the visual effects supervisor and the previs team is part of the process.

Weeks 10-12: Portfolio projects
You have three weeks to storyboard a project for your portfolio based on your specific field of interest. You can choose between a feature animation project, a television animation project or a video game cinematic animation project.
